Use Maine’s corporate name search provided by the Department of the Secretary of State to investigate whether a chosen business name is free or to view entity information. If a desired name is deceptively similar to one already on file with the Secretary of State, it’s likely that the initial filing will be rejected.

Business Entity Search
1. Navigate to Corporate Name Search
2. Enter Keyword
The first field asks for a Keyword from name to be searched. If looking to see if a name is available to register, enter the intended business name or keywords therein and select Click Here to Search.
Searching by Charter number is also available and will produce a singular search result, providing direct access to that entity’s info.
3. Scan Search Results
The subsequent page will be display any legal or former entity or trademark name that contains or matches exactly the keywords entered on the homepage. Scan the results to see if any are too similar to the desired business name.
If there are no results (see image), it’s likely that the chosen name is available for use and can be entered into the initial filings during registration.
To view the details of any listed entity, select Information Summary.
4. Review Information Summary
The information summary includes all of the following information:
- Legal name
- Charter number
- Filing type (entity type)
- Status
- Date of original filing
- Expiration date
- Jurisdiction
- Other entity names
- Whether the names are assumed or former
- Principal office address
- Clerk/registered agent name and address(es)
